It was around 1706, the Prince of Elbeuf had a pleasure house built near Portici. Managing excavations they undertook happened upon a vault, which led to the discovery of Herculaneum, buried under the lava of Vesuvius more than twenty meters deep. This city, which was called Pompeii, had just been rediscovered, and soldiers, quartered in Naples, were occupied in clearing the streets and the houses.
